AAPW, Stakeholders Engage Senate Committee on Niger Delta Commission to Address Climate Change Challenges

In a significant move toward addressing climate change and its dire consequences in the Niger Delta, Academic Associates PeaceWorks (AAPW) and its partners engaged with the Senate Committee on Niger Delta Commission, led by Senator Asuquo Ekpeyoung, at the National Assembly in Abuja.

Senator Ekpeyoung, in his opening remarks, emphasized that climate change poses one of the most critical challenges confronting the region. He stressed that tackling this crisis requires a deep understanding of its impact to formulate and implement policies that are not just reactive but proactive and sustainable. “The engagement marks the beginning of an ongoing collaboration that will lead to deeper involvement, including active participation and data collection,” he stated.

Air Commodore Darlington Abdullahi (Rtd), Operational Security Component Coordinator of the Italian Shipping Academy Foundation (FAIMM), delivered the opening speech on behalf of the consortium, outlining the policy brief’s key recommendations and addressing the profound impact of climate change on coastal communities, and the security challenges it exacerbates.

Adding to the discourse, AAPW Project Manager, Mr. Isu Menidin, presented a detailed analysis of climate change-induced conflicts in the Niger Delta. He underscored the challenges communities face due to environmental degradation and resource scarcity, emphasizing that the C7-WA project actively operates across five states in the region—Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Cross River, and Bayelsa.

PANDEF National Treasurer, Ifeoma Agbonmah, called for urgent federal government intervention, citing the severe environmental damage inflicted on the Niger Delta. She urged policymakers to take immediate action to protect affected communities and ensure sustainable development.

The Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee, Senator Patrick Ndubueze reinforced the committee’s commitment to exploring technological and research-based solutions. He assured that the insights and recommendations presented during the meeting would not remain within the conference room but would be brought to the legislative chambers for deliberation and action.
