International Day of Climate Action 2024

On this International Day of Climate Action, Academic Associates PeaceWorks (AAPW) stands united with the global community in acknowledging the critical need for bold, sustained efforts to combat climate change. The driving force behind Climate Action aligns with our unwavering commitment to mitigating climate change through community-driven initiatives in the Niger Delta.

At AAPW, we view climate action not only as an environmental responsibility but as a vital path to achieving a more sustainable, equitable, and prosperous world. Climate change is not a distant issue. The Niger Delta and other parts of Nigeria are experiencing devastating effects, from rising sea levels and flooding to droughts and unpredictable weather patterns that threaten livelihoods, especially for our farmers and fisherfolks. This is why AAPW, in collaboration with local communities, environmental advocates, and government stakeholders, is spearheading initiatives aimed at curbing the progression of climate change.

Our flagship initiatives, such as the Danish-funded Advancing Community Capacity to Mitigate Climate Change and Develop Green and Blue Economy project and the Coping with Climate Change as a Cause of Conflict in Coastal Communities of West Africa project, supported by the European Union (EU) and implemented alongside three other consortium partners, have made considerable strides in Nigeria, particularly in the Niger Delta. By working closely with local farming and fishing communities, we address the specific effects of climate change while enabling sustainable practices. These efforts not only reduce carbon emissions but also foster green jobs, protect biodiversity, and strengthen food security, demonstrating the far-reaching benefits of climate action for people and the planet.

Today, as we reflect on the significance of climate action, we are reminded of the power of collective effort. Tackling climate change is not solely the responsibility of governments and corporations. It requires the active participation of individuals and communities in reducing emissions, embracing renewable energy, and conserving our natural ecosystems. The actions we take today will shape the health of our planet for future generations.

AAPW is proud to be a driving force in this movement, delivering climate solutions tailored to the unique challenges and opportunities in the Niger Delta. As we commemorate the International Day of Climate Action, we renew our commitment to building resilient, climate-conscious communities, ensuring that those most affected by climate change are not only survivors but active agents of change.
