At Academic Associate PeaceWorks (AAPW), we are intensifying our commitment to addressing climate change and fostering sustainable farming practices in the Niger Delta. As part of our ongoing efforts, we recently convened network meetings in Bayelsa and Delta states, focusing on empowering communities to mitigate climate impacts while advancing the green and blue economy.
In Bayelsa, discussions centred on the establishment of demonstration farms in Ogboloma/Ayama/Okotiama, Okoroma, Deghele/Ogiedi, and Yobebe/Ogulagha communities. These farms are designed to serve as practical hubs where farmers can learn innovative agricultural techniques tailored to the region’s unique challenges. Participants proposed several advanced and sustainable methods, including suspended farming for efficient land use, smart pest and weed control, aquaponics for water reuse, and aquacultural farming suited to local conditions. We also emphasized reviving traditional practices by cultivating crops nearing extinction and employing wet and dry farming techniques to ensure year-round productivity.

Similarly, the Delta network meeting highlighted key areas such as farm layout and design, crop selection and rotation, irrigation and water management, pest and disease management, and record-keeping for effective monitoring. These discussions provided actionable strategies to enhance farming practices across the region.
A significant milestone in Bayelsa was the donation of tree seedlings by Chief (Dr.) Okolobiri Bartholomew, Executive Director of Tree for Tomorrow, to support reforestation efforts. Receiving the donation on behalf of the project communities, we assured that the seedlings would be promptly distributed to maximize impact.
In tandem with these efforts, we announced ongoing measurements and the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with project communities. This step solidifies partnerships with local stakeholders and underscores our dedication to fostering sustainable development.
Through demonstration farms and community-driven solutions, AAPW is empowering farmers and fisherfolk with the knowledge and tools needed to adapt to climate change, build resilience, and secure the region’s food systems.
